SPIC MACAY provides a platform to artists from different countries to promote both music & dance in India. This afternoon our auditorium was filled with the haunting notes of the Rubab and the beat of the Tombak….. and, for a while we were transported to another era and other lands of Central Asia …of camel caravans on the ancient Silk routes , smoky camp fires, dancers, rugged mountains and desert sands…to say that we were spell bound would be to put it lightly.
Kengo Saito of Japan played the Afghani Rubab and Fakroddin Ghaffari of Iran played the Tombak as well as theEgyptian Darbuka, the Kurdish Daf similar to the Indian Dafli and the Turkish Doumbek .They explained and demonstrated each instrument , its place of origin and the material used to fashion them. For our students, it was a tremendous learning experience as they enthusiastically interacted with both Mr. Kengo Saito & Mr. Fakroddin Ghaffari.
Both the musicians have lived and imbibed many aspects of Indian Classical music and eventually, it is this ancient heritage that binds our countries and our destinies.
